This is what I understand from scripture about sanctification:
First, we are righteous before God by the imputed righteousness of Jesus.
Romans 3:
21

ut now the RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD, without the lw is manifested, being witnessed
by the law and the prophets.
22: Even the RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD which is BY FAITH OF JESUS CHRIST unto all and
upon all them that BELIEVE, for there is no idffference
23: For all lahve sinned, and come short of the glory of God
Also
I Cor. 1:
29: That no flesh should glory in his presence.
30: But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, wo of God is made unto us wisdom, and
righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
31: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
In the Book of Hebrews it states:
Hebrews 10:
9: Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that
he may establish the second.
10: By the which will, we are SANCTIFIED THROUGH THE OFFERING OF
THE BODY OF JESUS CHRIST ONCE FOR ALL.
Also:
Hebrews 10:
14: For by ONE OFFERING THE HATH PERFECTED FOREVER them that are sanctified.
Can we add any righteousness to the RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD by our sanctification
in ourselves? It states that by one offering we are sanctified ONCE FOR ALL. And
it states that by one offering HE HATH PERFECTED FOREVER THEM ARE ARE SANCTIFIED.
So in Christ we have righteousness before God, which by our sanctification IN OURSELVES,
cannot add to or take away. THIS RIGHTEOUSNESS IS IMPUTED, OR CREDITED, OR RECKONED UNTO OUR ACCOUNT IN HEAVEN, and it can never be taken away, it is forever!!

Colossians 2:
9: FOR IN HIM DWELLETH ALL THE FULNESS OF THE gODHEAD BODILY
10: And ye are complete in Him, wich is the head of all principality and power:
Read on:
And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened
TOGETHER WITH HIM, HAVING FORGIVEN YOU ALL TREPASSES
Do our so called "good works" add to this righteousness? No, as Paul states,
Romans 7
19: For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20: Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
21: I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

I John 1:
8: If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse
us from all unrighteousness.
10: If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
So what is the answer?
God does not save us because we are good! None of us is good. The scriptures state:
Romans 3:
8: .....both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin:
19: ....All the world may become guilty before God.
What happened to Israel?
Romans 9:
30: What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness,
have attained to righteousness, even the "RIGHTEOUSNESS OF FAITH"
31: But Israel, which followed after the lw of righteousness, hath not attained to the
law of righteouenss.
32: Wherefore? Because they SOUGHT IT NOT BY FAITH,, but as it were by
the WORKS OF THE LAW, For lthey stumbled at that stumblingstone;
33: As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence;
and whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed.
